Slumping Washington Faces MLB-Best Yankees Monday Night

On Monday night the Washington Nationals will host the New York Yankees in a make-up game after two of their games were cancelled last month.

The Nationals come into this game losers of three in a row and five of their last six. Those last three were at the hands of previously slumping Toronto. The three games were decided by a total of five runs.

Twice the Nationals produced enough offense to win if the pitching was up to snuff. Once they were stymied by Blue Jays pitching.

On Sunday they dropped an 8-6 decision as Toronto hit four home runs off of Washington pitching. Randal Grichuk hit two and Teoscar Hernandez and Yangervis Solarte hit back-to-back homers in the eighth to break a 6-6 tie.

Washington is now 37-31 and the slump has dropped them 3.5 games back of Atlanta for first in the NL East and just a half game up on Philadelphia for third.

The Yankees took three of four games from Tampa Bay on the weekend, dropping the finale by a 3-1 score. In winning the first three games they outscored the Rays 13-4. They continue to be amongst the very best teams in baseball and are in a statistical tie with Boston for first in the AL East.

They have the fewest losses in the Major Leagues and their .687 winning percentage is tops.

In the month of June, Washington is averaging 3.84 RPG and their team ERA is 4.02 and their record is 5-8.

New York is averaging 4 RPG and their team ERA is 2.04 and their record is 11-4.

Sonny Gray (4-4, 4.98 ERA) allowed four runs in five innings last week in a 5-4 loss to Washington. It broke a two-game streak where he allowed one run and six hits in 14 innings of work. New York is 3-2 in his last five and 5-5 in his last ten.

Erick Fedde (0-1, 5.91 ERA) is making his third start of the year and sixth of his career. He was the starter in last week’s 5-4 win, allowing four runs in five innings. He gave up three runs in 5.2 innings in his season debut to the Padres, a game his team lost.

The Yankees are -117 favorites and Washington +107 underdogs. The over/under is nine runs. Both teams are struggling to score runs at the moment, but the Yankees pitching is the best in the majors this month by over a half run. I think Gray reverts to recent form and the bullpen takes over from there. The Pick: Yankees 6-2.
