Cubs and Mets Face Off Looking to Gain on Division Leaders

The Chicago Cubs and New York Mets are both within earshot of the leaders of their respective divisions. Neither have been playing their best ball either of late. In the Mets case they are dealing with their usual battery of injuries.

New York started the season with one of the best records in all of baseball, 12-2 after 14 games and 15-6 after their first 21. Since then they’ve managed a 12-21 record and its dropped them around .500 and in fourth place in the NL East in a very competitive division.

Currently they have ten players who have gone on the disable list since the season started, including stalwarts like Noah Syndergaard, Yoenis Cespedes, Travis d’Arnaud, Steven Matz and Wilmer Flores.

So it is no surprise they are just 3-8 since May 21 heading into weekend play.

Amongst the healthy Mets, Amed Rosario had the best month of May, hitting .277 with three home runs and ten RBIs. Asdrubal Cabrera led the team with five home runs and 17 RBIs.

The bullpen has a 4.41 ERA with only two regulars posting sub 3.00 ERAs.

Chicago in the meanwhile has been pretty streaky thus far into the season. The month of May included a five-game winning streak followed by a five-game losing streak. They then went 9-8 over the rest of the month, but finished strong with a 5-2 stretch with wins over the Giants, Pirates and Mets.

Anthony Rizzo had a torrid month, hitting .303 with seven home runs and 28 RBIs in 26 games.

The bullpen has been a huge strength for the team, posting a 2.68 ERA thus far. Five pitchers with at least ten innings pitched have ERAs 2.04 or better.

Mike Montgomery (1-1, 4.35 ERA) is the Cubs swing pitcher. He had made 18 straight bullpen appearances to begin his season, but got the start last time out against Pittsburgh. He pitched 5.2 shutout innings, allowing two hits and no walks in a 7-0 victory.

Jacob deGrom (4-0, 1.52 ERA) has been pitching at a Cy Young level this year. He’s been basically unhittable in his last seven starts allowing a grand total of two runs. He did leave one of them after one innings due to injury. But the Mets have struggled to produce runs with him on the mound as the team has lost four of his last five appearances and are 5-6 when he takes the mound.

New York is -118 favorites and Chicago is -102 underdogs. It is crazy for the Mets to have a losing overall record with deGrom on the mound and his sparkling 1.52 ERA. I think they’ll find a way to get him a win here. The Pick: Mets 3-2.
