Chicago Looks to Snap Slump as They Visit LA Dodgers

The Chicago Cubs went into Cincinnati on the weekend probably expecting to nail down a few easy wins in order to keep pace with Milwaukee atop the NL Central. The Reds have been playing better of late, but I’m sure the last thing they expected is getting swept in a four-game series.

The pitching deserted them on the weekend as they allowed at least six runs in each game for a total of 31 runs in total. That’s especially surprising since they had given up 2.36 RPG in the first 18 games of the month which was best in the league.

They started June on an 8-2 roll and are 4-8 since then.

The Los Angeles Dodgers have resurrected their season over the past six weeks or so and that’s continued in earnest in June. They are 15-5 in June and in the seven series they’ve played this month, they’ve won six of them. They are coming off a sweep of the Mets in New York.

But the one series they lost came just prior to facing New York when they went into Chicago and lost two of three. The teams engaged in three tight games with the Dodgers scoring five runs in the series with Chicago putting up nine.

The Dodgers are averaging 6 RPG in June and their team ERA is 3.66.

The Cubs are averaging 3.72 RPG in June and their team ERA is 3.62 with a 12-10 record.

Duane Underwood Jr. (0-0, 0.00 ERA) is making his major league debut on Monday. He is 3-7 with a 4.27 ERA in 14 games and 13 starts in AAA Iowa this season. In his last start he gave up one earned run in 5 2/3 innings.

Kenta Maeda (4-4, 3.84 ERA) has pitched much better of late after a rough start to his season. He had pitched two impressive outings, throwing 14.2 scoreless innings at the end of May, but then got injured in his following start against Philadelphia. Since coming back he’s allowed five earned runs in 8.2 innings of work. Last time out he gave up three runs in 3.2 innings of a 4-3 win over the Cubs. The Dodgers have won four of his last five appearances after dropping four of the previous five.

The Dodgers are -154 favorites and Chicago +144 underdogs. Chicago is going up against one of the hottest hitting teams in the league with a semi-decent starting pitcher making his debut. Gotta like the Dodgers chances here. The Pick: Dodgers 5-3.
