Boston Looks to Get Even With New York on Saturday
The Boston Red Sox dropped an 8-1 decision to the New York Yankees in the opener of their three-game series on Friday. The long-time rivals are in a battle for first place in the AL East, not to mention for the best record in the Major Leagues.
With the win, New York pulled even atop the division, but they have played four less games than Boston.
CC Sabathia has been great of late and finally got some run support from the offense as he pitched seven innings of six-hit ball. New York hit four home runs on the night led by Greg Bird who hit two home runs. The Yankees blew it open with a four-run fourth inning to take a 5-0 lead.
The loss snapped Boston’s four-game winning streak. They had also won six of seven coming into the game. The offense had been cruising, scoring 46 runs in the first of those five wins. But they managed to score just four on Thursday before getting shut down on Friday.
New York were swept by Tampa Bay last weekend, but they have since won three of four.
New York’s pitching has been downright nasty lately. In the month of June their team ERA is a sparkling 2.30 and it’s helped them put up an 18-8 record. The offense has had its struggles this month on the way to averaging 4.12 RPG.
Boston has averaged 4.77 RPG and their team ERA is 3.47. The team is 16-10 overall in June.
Chris Sale (7-4, 2.56 ERA) has been sharp for most of the season and certainly in his last four starts after a two game blip in his game. Since then, he’s allowed four runs in 28 innings of work (1.29 ERA) to go along with 43 strike outs and just 15 hits allowed. But Boston has only been able to split those games and are 5-5 in his last ten starts.
Sonny Gray (5-5, 4.93 ERA) has been pretty inconsistent all year. Recently he has allowed two runs or less in three of his last six starts. He’s allowed four runs or more in the other three. New York has split those games and are 5-5 in his last ten.
Boston is -137 favorites and New York +127 underdogs. I agree with that sentiment the way Sale has been pitching of late. I wouldn’t even be surprised to see him go the distance. The Pick: Boston 6-1.
