Pair of Aces to Meet as Boston and New York Wrap up Series
Two games and The Boston Red Sox New York Yankees series is still waiting for some drama. On Friday the Yankees blew out the Red Sox 8-1 in a game dominated by CC Sabathia and four home runs from the offense.
On Saturday Boston returned the favor, crushing the Yankees 11-0. Chris Sale continued his dominating ways throwing a one-hitter over seven innings and striking out 11. Meanwhile the offense cranked out 17 hits off of Sonny Gray and a collection of relievers. Rafael Devers led the way going 5-for-5 with three runs and 4 RBIs.
The win put Boston back in front in the AL East, a game up on New York.
Boston is 7-2 in its last nine games. New York is 3-2 in its last five and 4-5 in its last nine.
David Price (9-5, 3.66 ERA) has been pitching like the ace that he’s been for most of his career over his last nine starts. He’s lowered his ERA from 5.11 to the current 3.66 and allowed three runs or less in each of those starts. It adds up to a 2.72 ERA over that span and the Red Sox have won on eight of those occasions.
Luis Severino (12-2, 2.10 ERA) is finally starting to get his due as one of the best pitchers in baseball. He’s certainly edged his way into the Cy Young conversation on the strength of his consistency this season. He’s allowed three runs or less in 17 of 18 starts, with the only exception coming in his third start back on April 10th. He’s also allowed two runs or less in 13 starts and in six of his last seven. His ERA in May was a sparkling 2.03 and he’s bettered it in June at 1.60. The Yankees won three straight and 13 of his last 14 starts.
New York is -176 favorites and Boston +166 underdogs. This should be an incredible pitching matchup, but the way Severino and that Yankees pitching staff have been going of late, I like their chances. The Pick: Yankees 4-2.
