Pittsburgh Continues West Coast Trip with a Visit to Los Angeles

The Pittsburgh Pirates are in the midst of a nine-game road trip with their previous three games on the west coast. They took two of three from the Mets to get the trip started and just took two of three from San Diego as well.

The winning run has raised their record to 40-43 entering the series and they are in fourth place in the NL Central.

The Los Angeles Dodgers salvaged a win in their three-game series with Colorado, taking the finale 6-4. They managed to score just two runs in the first two games of the series and had lost three straight and four of five coming into Sunday’s game. They are  44-39 entering play on Monday and are in second in the NL West.

The Dodgers offense was strong for most of June as the team averaged 5.38 RPG overall and the team seemed to be well on their way to surging back to the top of the division with a 16-5 start to the month. Their team ERA was 3.70 and they went 17-9 overall in June.

Pittsburgh’s offense was third worst in the league in June, averaging 3.73 RPG. Their team ERA was 4.09 and they went 10-16 in June before winning their first game of July.

Nick Kingham (2-3, 3.82 ERA) is making his first start since June 9th and just the seventh of his career. He had a memorable debut, no-hitting St Louis through 6 2/3 innings. He’s looked more pedestrian since then, allowing 15 earned runs in 28.1 innings for a 4.80 ERA. The Pirates have lost his last four starts.

Alex Wood (4-5, 4.00 ERA) had his third straight start allowing two earned runs or less. His ERA over that span is 2.47. He’s also allowed two runs or less in eight of ten starts. The Dodgers have won his last three starts and are 7-3 in his last ten outings.

Los Angeles is -165 favorites and Pittsburgh +155 underdogs. Is this recent slump by the Dodgers a blip on the radar or more a reflection of who this team is this year considering how bad they were to start the season? Against a middling team like Pittsburgh at home, the Dodgers of recent seasons should be able to sweep them, but that’s not the feeling you get right now. At the same time, I think they’ll at least win on Monday. The Pick: Dodgers 5-3.
