Chicago Looks to Stay Hot as they Face Detroit

The Chicago Cubs beat the Detroit Tigers 5-3 on Tuesday. The win was the Cubs fifth in a row and the loss snapped Detroit’s two-game winning streak.

The Tigers jumped out to an early 3-0 lead and it’s the fifth straight time that Chicago has fallen behind to start the game before coming back to win.

In this case Michael Fulmer was able to keep the Cubs off the scoreboard until the fifth inning and three different Tigers got RBIs to build that lead.

Chicago tied the game by the time the fifth was over and it was the top of the lineup getting the job done. Leadoff hitter Albert Almora Jr., Jayson Heward and Anthony Rizzo each had RBI hits. The winning run came in the seventh on a ground out by Rizzo and Kyle Schwarber homered in the eighth to complete the scoring.

Detroit had lost 11 in a row before winning the final two games of their four-game series with Toronto. Chicago is coming off a sweep of Minnesota and prior to that they took two of three from Minnesota. Since getting hot their offense has really come alive, scoring at least ten runs in each of their four previous wins. They’ve scored 65 runs in their last seven games.
The Tigers remain in second place in the weak AL Central with a 38-49 record.

Chicago is second in the NL Central with a 48-35 record and a game back of Milwaukee.

Francisco Liriano (3-4, 3.99 ERA) has allowed three earned runs or less in three of his last four games. If he could finish with a sub 4.00 ERA, that would be the first time in four seasons he’ll accomplish that feat. Last time out he allowed three runs in six innings in a 3-2 loss to Toronto. The Tigers have lost his last four starts and six of seven.

Jose Quintana (6-6. 4.31 ERA) has been much better of late after struggling to start the year. He’s allowed three runs or less in five of his last seven starts. He gave up three runs in 5.1 innings of an 11-5 win over the Dodgers last time out. Chicago has won four of his last six starts and are 6-4 in his last ten outings.

Chicago is -210 favorites and Detroit +180 underdogs. The way the Cubs offense is hitting these days, I like their chances against a mid-grade pitcher like Liriano. The Pick Cubs 8-3.
