Chicago Looks to Sweep St Louis on Sunday Night Baseball

The Chicago Cubs rolled to an easy 13-5 win over the St Louis Cardinals on Friday. They had to work harder on Saturday before eventually emerging victorious, 6-3.

The Cardinals got on the board in the first inning, taking a 2-0 lead and then again 3-2 after the Cubs tied it in the fourth. An Ian Happ double in the seventh put Chicago up 4-3 and Jason Heyward hit a two-run shot in the eight for the 6-3 final.

St Louis made things interesting in the ninth, putting two runners on with nobody out on Brendan Morrow before the Cubs closer struck out two on the way to retiring the side without allowing a run.

The Cubs have now won two straight and are 11-4 in their last 15 games dating back to May 31st.

St Louis has lost four straight and are 7-8 in their last 15 also dating back to the 31st.

Jose Quintana (6-4, 4.09 ERA)’s last start epitomized his season up till now. He was shaky at times against the first place Brewers, but held down the fort in key moments. Add it all up and he allowed two runs, four hits and two walks in six innings of work in a 7-2 win. In his last five starts he’s had one shaky one where he gave up four runs in 4.1 innings. In two of the others he didn’t allow a run and in the two others he allowed two runs. Chicago has won four of his last five appearances.

Jack Flaherty (3-2, 2.96 ERA) has looked good in his first full season as a starter. He’s made eight starts and hasn’t missed a turn since May 15th, which stretches back six starts. He’s allowed one run in four of his most recent six including last time out when he pitched 6.1 innings in a 5-2 win over San Diego. St Louis has won four of his last five.

Chicago is -119 favorites and St Louis +109 underdogs. This feels like another game that’ll go down to the wire and I think the home side takes it to salvage something positive in the series. The Pick: Cardinals 4-3.
