Miami Looks to Stop Slide as They Visit Streaking Portland

The Miami Heat have lost three straight as part of a 3-7 run. Now they’re embarking on a west coast trip that begins with a trip to visit the Portland Trail Blazers who are playing some of their best ball of the season.

Miami’s only wins since beating Boston on January 10th have come against four of the worst teams in the league in Memphis, Chicago, Cleveland and New York.

Each of their last three losses have come at home and the last time out they were beat 95-88 by Indiana.

That lack of offense has been hurting them all season, and that’s been no exception of late. In a year where scoring is up across the league they’ve been held to 102 points or less in eight of their last ten games.

The Heat’s record is down to 24-27 which is still good enough for the 8th seed in the East, 1.5 games ahead of Detroit.

In the loss to the Pacers they were held to just 11 points in the fourth quarter and it spoiled their own defensive effort as they kept Indiana to 11 points as well. Dwayne Wade led the way with 21 points, and Hassan Whiteside had 19 points and 14 rebounds in defeat.

Portland has won three straight and six of their last seven. It’s come against a relatively soft schedule, but two of the wins have come against a Utah team that’s been dominating teams of late.

Portland has been off since last Wednesday when they beat the Jazz 132-105. Damian Lillard scored 36 points and had 11 assists in the win. C.J. McCollum scored 30 points as the team sped out to a 45-27 first quarter lead and never looked back.

The offense was in high gear in those last three games, scoring 120 points or more in each.

In Miami’s last ten games they’re averaging 97.9 PPG and allowing 105.2 PPG

In Portland’s last seven they are averaging 121.7 PPG and allowing 110.4 PPG

Jusuf Nurkic suffered a knee injury against Utah and is out for this one. He’s been instrumental as a third-cog behind the big two, especially on defense.

Portland is -7.5 point favorites and the over/under is 223. The rust issue is certainly a factor, but this team is one of the best in the league and I expect a second half surge to pull away. The Pick: Portland 112-102.
