Vegas Odds & MLB Predictions: Boston Red Sox at Atlanta Braves (September 4th, 2018)
Boston Looks for Second Straight Win over Atlanta
The Boston Red Sox took the opener of their three-game series with the Atlanta Braves by a score of 8-2. This was a tight 3-2 game until the Red Sox broke it open with five runs in the final two innings. Ian Kinsler led the way for Boston with two hits and three RBIs.
With Boston it’s been a pattern of extremes over the past nine games. They’ve posted a 5-5 record and in that time they’ve scored at least seven runs in each of the wins. They’ve also beaten their opponents by at least five runs in four of those victories.
Meanwhile in the five defeats they’ve scored a grand total of six runs while yielding 38.
In spite of the mediocre play they remain 8.5 games ahead of the Yankees for first in the AL East.
Atlanta has also been up and down of late, posting a 4-6 record in their last ten. In their wins over that period they’ve put up 23 runs and allowed nine. In their losses they’ve been outscored 28-14.
They’ve been able to maintain a healthy lead atop the NL East, as they are four games ahead of the Phillies who have also been struggling for wins of late.
Rick Porcello (15-7, 4.27 ERA) has been up and down through the heart of the summer. He’s given up at least four earned runs in five of his last nine starts, and has just one quality start in his last five. Last time out he allowed four runs in five innings in a 9-4 win over the White Sox. The Red Sox are 6-4 in his last ten outings, but 2-3 in his last five.
Sean Newcomb (11-7, 3.85 ERA) has also been hit hard of late, allowing five earned runs or more in three of his last four starts. All told he has an 8.48 ERA over that span in spite throwing six scoreless innings two starts ago. Atlanta has split his last four outings and are 5-5 in his last ten.
Boston is -130 favorites and Atlanta +110 underdogs. Both teams and pitchers have struggled to string together wins of late. As such, I’m inclined to take the Braves to find a way to even things up. The Pick: Braves 6-4.
