Vegas Odds & MLB Predictions: Chicago White Sox at New York Yankees

New York Yankees Looking for Win as They Face Chicago White Sox

The New York Yankees are in a mad dash to chase down the Boston Red Sox and avoid a one and done wildcard game that is likely to come against the Cinderella Oakland Athletics.

As such any game against a team below .500 is pretty much a must win at this point as they found themselves trailing the Red Sox by 6.5 games to start the week.

Home games are especially important, so you can imagine the disappointment in the locker room after they dropped a 6-2 decision to the White Sox on Monday. The Yankees came into the game having won four in a row and eight of nine all against teams well below .500.

The only thing is, right now, this is not your everyday weak Chicago White Sox team. They’ve actually been playing very good ball of late. The Monday win was their fourth in a row. They were 37 games below .500 after losing to the Royals on August 1st. But since then they’ve managed a 15-9 record to help boost morale in the clubhouse.

At the same time, they had only played six games against teams in a playoff position as part of the streak. They were swept by the Yankees at the start of the month and followed it up by losing two of three to Cleveland.

Jose Abreu has been playing like a superstar this month, pacing the White Sox offense with a .338 average, six home runs and 19 RBIs. Both Tim Anderson and Daniel Palka have 15 RBIs apiece.

The Yankees are still without some key offensive firepower in Aaron Judge and Gary Sanchez. To that last you can also add recent additions to the 10-day DL, Aroldis Chapman and Didi Gregorius.

CC Sabathia (7-4, 3.30 ERA) has had a terrific bounce back year in this his 18th season. After slumping in July he’s pitched well again in August, posting a 2.18 ERA in four starts. He’s now allowed two runs or less in each of his last five starts. The Yankees have won four of them and are 7-3 in his last ten.

Reynaldo Lopez (4-9, 4.66 ERA) has made five starts in August, allowing two runs or less in three of them. In the other two (against the Royals and Tigers) he gave up ten runs in seven innings. One of the starts came against the Yankees and he allowed one run in seven innings in a 4-3 loss on August 7th.

New York is -240 favorites and Chicago +220 underdogs. I think the Yankees will find a way to win and keep the pressure on Boston. The Pick: New York 5-3.
