Vegas Odds & NFL Predictions: Cleveland Browns at Detroit Lions

Detroit Hosts Cleveland In Teams’ Preseason Finale

It’s the last week of preseason and as is the custom, both the Detroit Lions and Cleveland Browns have announced that their starters will be sitting for this game.

But that doesn’t mean that there aren’t jobs on the line or backups looking to make a big impression in their last amount of extended time.

For the Browns the biggest player who fits that category is their number one overall pick, QB Baker Mayfield. Tyrod Taylor was already anointed the starter as the season gets underway, but it is only a matter of time before Mayfield takes over. The better he looks in these games, the quicker that day will come.

Last week the Browns beat the Eagles by the very ugly score of 5-0 and no that is not a misprint. The defense was masterful in exploiting Super Bowl hero Nick Foles and company. They actually forced four turnovers and got the to Eagles QBs for seven sacks.

But the Browns offense could not convert with all their opportunities and Mayfield was one of the biggest culprits. He saw extensive playing time, completing eight of 12 passes for a paltry 76 yards. He was intercepted once and sacked twice. It was his worst performance of the preseason.

One more exciting Browns rookie who is expected to play is WR Antonio Callaway. The fourth round rookie looked good in the opening two games, but missed last week’s dress rehearsal with a groin injury.

The Lions in the meanwhile might wish they could play their starters in this one to help get ready for the season.

The offense looked flat in the opening two games, putting up just 27 combined points. In last week’s game the starters still did not look up to speed., especially the offensive line. The Bucs had Matthew Stafford running for his life and in the end they sacked him three times and held him to nine completions on 18 attempts.

The Lions defense also helped make the Bucs backup QBs, Ryan Fitzpatrick and Ryan Griffin look like starting caliber players. The Bucs backups completed 14 of 18 passes for 182 yards and a touchdown.

The defense has now allowed 60 points in the last two games. I know it’s just preseason, but Matt Patricia is part of a regime change that would like to be making a better first impression.

Cleveland is -2.5 favorites and by way of Mayfield playing and the Browns backup defense looking much better thus far I like their chances. The Pick: Brown 24-14.
