Vegas Odds & NFL Predictions: Philadelphia Eagles at Cleveland Browns

Philadelphia at Cleveland Kicks off Week Three of the Preseason

Typically, week three is the one where the starters get the most reps and teams show the greatest part of the playbook we might expect to see in the regular season.

For the Philadelphia Eagles that should mean an extended look at QB Nick Foles running the offense. He hurt his throwing shoulder in last week’s 37-20 loss to New England, but he’s responded well to treatment and is expected to play the first half this week against the Cleveland Browns.

The Eagles also lost in week one to Pittsburgh 31-14.

This team is of course still dealing with the major injury that starting QB Carson Went suffered in December of last season and he won’t be playing in this game. Another key starter is out in WR1 Alshon Jeffery.

The veteran Mike Wallace was signed to be the WR 2 for the team in free agency. Starting left tackle Jason Peters is back in the starting lineup after he went out for the season mid-way through last year.

Rookie TE Dallas Goedert has looked great in the preseason and combined with the incumbent Zach Ertz should help the Eagles dominate the middle of the field.

The Cleveland Browns in the meanwhile are breaking in the number one overall pick Baker Mayfield to be their quarterback of the future. They are also integrating Tyrod Taylor to be their quarterback of the present and help lead the team back from the abyss. The Browns went 0-16 last year, 1-15 the year before and 2-14 the year before that.

WR1 Jarvis Landry was acquired in a trade with the Dolphins and is also being counted on to help resurrect the offense.

Josh Gordon returned to the team this week, but he certainly won’t be playing in this one.

RB Nick Chubb was dynamic for Georgia last year and he’s already assumed the RB 1 mantle.

The defense added Denzel Ward with the fourth overall pick to the secondary. Combined with Jabrill Peppers, Emmanuel Ogbah and Myles Garrett this is already shaping up to be talented group of young players that should be a strength of the team for years.

The offense really struggled last week in their 19-17 loss to Buffalo. Mayfield went just 7-13 for 75 yards and Taylor was 4-7 for 22 yards for 83 combined passing yards on the day. Chubb on the other hand looked good gaining 53 yards on 11 carries and he had a touchdown as well. Carlos Hyde came over from the 49ers and the running back went 9-64-1 last week.

Cleveland is -3 favorites and given that they have more to play for with more key spots up for grabs, I like their chances. The Pick: Browns 24-17.
